The Great Forging of Aelbrand

by Thomas Setzer

In the days of legend Farinul the Smith went into the lands of Lustria in search of the Otesh Rillisliddian. The Draoi had foreseen a future in which a Great King would carry a powerful sword made from a Star. Farinul was certain this was the Star they had seen fall to the land.

He traveled for many seasons, searching the wild jungles and mountians, he fought Slann mages, Lizardmen, and Amazon Warriors on his journey. Many of his companions were slain or died of disease, despair and sickness almost overcame him, but he went on with the search. Each time he despaired and thought to return home, another clue to Otesh Rillisliddian would come his way.

In the month of the Fifth Beltaine of his journey, he came upon an old and dirty beggar sitting by the trail, now Farinul and the few companions remaining with him were on the last of their food with only enough for a couple of meals left, and no place to obtain more. Farinul took pity on the beggar, and gave him the last of his food. Then the beggar took a dull grey stone from his bag, a stone that weighed more than that of the heaviest hammer. He gave this stone to Farinul and said to him, "Start your forging on a full moon at Beltaine, and forge the metal seven times seven times, and quench it in the waters of the well of woe at the dark of the moon at Samhain, then take the blade to the shrines of all the Gods and have it blessed. You must start with the Shrine of Khaine and end with the Shrine of Asuryan on the day of Beltaine. When you have done all of this, place upon the blade a hilt of purest Mithril and take it to the Draoi to enchant, and name it Aelbrand.

"Aelbrand must never be wielded by other than the rightful Ard Rhi of the Kindred in the time to come."

Farinul did all of these things, and the sword was made, and it was placed in the Hall of the Draoi, and they placed many enchantments upon the sword, and when it was finished it was presented to the King, and it has remained the weapon of the Ard Rhis unto this time.
