I have come up with an alternative Defense Turret rule to simulate ships mutually supporting one another from waves and salvoes of ordinance.
Any ship which is being attacked by ordinance, may use the half the defense turret value (rounding up) of any friendly ships that are in base to base contact with it. The maximum defense turret value may never be more than twice the defense turret value of the ship under ordinance attack. However, any of the ships that participated in this ordinance defense may only defend against that particular type of ordinance attack for the rest of the ordinance phase (torpedo salvo or attack craft) but not both.
Creator's Notes:
The reason for this alternate rule is simple; to provide a fleet with the ability to fend off unmassed ordinance attacks and allow for more of a combined arms effect to take place. For carrier task forces they will need to mass their attack craft into a more overwhelming force if they want to take out a "big prize" with their attack craft. Plus it would force timing your attacks (torpedo salvoes striking the same turn as attack craft) to be more of an issue. Of course there are some big drawbacks to keeping your forces in base to base contact, Nova Cannons are way more effective when they hit and if a big ship does go into Plasma or Warp Drive meltdown all I can say is kiss your arse goodbye.
