Blood Angels Commander Borealis

by Nite Moogle

As captain of the Blood Angel's 5th company, Borealis has proven an effective and able commander. He rose through the ranks of the Blood Angels in less than 150 years- the second youngest ever to attain captain in the Blood Angels. He was awarded the position of captain and his suit of Terminator armor when his Devastator squad held an escape route open long enough for three squads of Terminators to fall back to the bunkers during a massive Ork assault. A Thunderhawk gunship soon arrived to evacuate the surrounded troops, but Borealis and his squad refused to board until all the Terminators had boarded. Borealis later said in his report that he could not continue to serve knowing that several of the priceless suits of armor would have been lost to the Ork mobs.

This feat of honor also proved to be an excellent career move, as all three Terminator Sergeants, the Thunderhawk commander, and even the 1st Company commander brought this valorous deed to the attention of Chapter Master Dante. The top officers unanimously voted to promote Borealis to the recently vacated position of Captain of the 5th company, and as a personal show of thanks, 1st Company Commander Arcturus awarded Borealis with a suit of Terminator armor- Arcturus jokingly remarked that Borealis would now have an excuse to retreat instead of attempting to sacrifice himself.

Since his promotion, Borealis has declined to add banners or use a helmetless suit of armor. Borealis cites a few experiences he had while still a scout- his sergeant was singled out by an Ork Weirdboy's psyhic attack, and Borealis belives it was due to the sergeant's backpack banner. He has also seen several occasions where shots that would have been stopped by a helmet have resulted in casualties. His theory seems to be at least partly true, since he has only been knocked out of combat three times in 45 years- and two of those were stray shots!

Borealis believes in concentrating fire on the major threats with the biggest guns at his disposal. He constantly works to get his troops better equipment, and pushes his Techmarines to get the most from his armor division in combat. Detatchments rarely go into battle without armor support and rapid evac standing by. Borealis takes his position very seriously, and strives to use the Space Marine's superior firepower and mobility to gain the upper hand in any struggle.

As part of the ongoing development of the combi-weapon, the Forges of Mars have sent the Blood Angels several prototype Plasma Blasters, a few of which Arcturus has distributed throught the Chapter. He has given Borealis one, but due to its tempramental power supply, it spends a fair amount of time in Techmarine Tholix's lab. Borealis is not dumb enough to pass up a powerful weapon, however, so the Plasma Blaster gets regular field tests.

Any Blood Angels army may include Borealis as a HQ choice. He may only be used as follow- no additional wargear is permitted. He may only be used if your opponent agrees (because of special Plasma Blaster rules).

Wargear: Plasma Blaster, Terminator Armor (+1 attck bonus included in profile above), Chainfist, Teleport Homer, Purity Seals.

Independent Character: Unless accompanied by a Command Squad, Borealis is an independant character and follows the Independent Character special rules in the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook.

Plasma Blaster: The plasma blaster is an experimental weapon and has the following statistics:

Weapon Range Str AP Type
Plasma Blaster 24" 7 2 Assault 2

Special rules: The Plasma blaster is an attempt to expand on the successful technology of the storm bolter. Due to the rarity of the item and the enormous amount of power needed to effectively run the Plasma Blaster, it is only available to Independent Characters in Terminator armor, counting as a two-handed weapon. If either of the to-hit dice is a one, the user must make an armor save or suffer a wound (if the other shot hits, it hits even if Borealis is killed by the Plasma Blaster). The Narthecium will not automatically save this. If the to-hit roll is double ones, the Plasma Blaster's power feed has overloaded and it explodes, killing the user instantly. Place the Ordinance template centered over Borealis. Any other models under the marker (friend or foe!) sustain automatic hits, models partially under are hit on a 4+. Resolve hits at Strength 7, AP 2. If there is intervening cover between the blast center and the affected model, cover saves may be taken.

If you wish to field a Plasma Blaster for your own purposes, I suggest 35 points for a cost if used with a Space Marine Codex, or +25 to your cost if using the Warhammer 40,000 rulebook armies.
