Cavalry Squads are assault marines culled form one of the many planets that have regressed to post industrial technology. Cavalry warriors are the supreme fighting unit of these planets and the Adeptus Astartes have used this pre-Marine training to good use with their Cavalry Squads. These units add a dangerous and formidable option to the Assault power already available to a Space Marine Army.

Squad: The Cavalry Squad consists of between four and nine Cavalry Marines and a Sergeant.

Weapons: Bolt pistol, and frag grenades.

Options: Any model may be armed with a Hunting Lance at +12 pts each.

Any model may be armed with a Close Combat Weapon at+1 pt each.

Up to two models per squad can be equipped with plasma pistols at +5 pts each.

The entire squad may be armed with Krak grenades at +2 pts per model and/or Melta bombs at +4 pts per model.

Character: A Veteran Sergeant may be given additional equipment from the Space Marine Armory.

SPECIAL RULES

Cavalry: Cavalry Marines use the standard rules for Cavalry as listed in the Warhammer 40K rulebook. (pg. 93)

Hunting Lance: Space Marine models with a Hunting Lance are devastating in a charge. During any round that the Cavalry Squad charges, any model armed with a hunting lance doubles his initiative (I8). In addition, The model’s strength is increased by 2 (S6) and the hunting lance is treated as a power weapon (Ignore armor saves). If the Model should be charged or the enemy unit is not routed, the lance is treated as a CCW with no special abilities.

The drawbacks to Hunting Lances are that they reduce the number of attacks allowed by the model to 1. This is not modified by any other factors such as charge or Two CCW rules. Only 1 attack is ever allowed by a Hunting lance equipped Model.

Trot: A Marine Cavalry Squad may opt to trot rather than standard movement. This allows the unit to move 9" in the movement phase and Assault up to 9" in the assault phase. This option must be declared before movement begins. A trotting unit may fire only Pistol weapons.

Designers notes: Cavalry Squads would be perfectly legal to field in even a Games Workshop run tournament by declaring them as standard Assault Squads with Jump Packs. Each Marine has a free CCW and the Hunting lances that you have converted for house games could be declared CCW. Use all normal jump pack rules for your Cavalry Marines. (of course fitting 4-5 Cavalry Marines on a rooftop may prove difficult) the conversions are sure to be a tabletop hit (unless your models are not so spiffy) And only a bozo opponent or Lame judge would deny you their use.

Assume that your horses gallop around difficult terrain rather than flying over it or jump it in the case of rivers and such.
