Grey Legion Chaplains administer the rites of the Chapter, perform ceremonies of Initiation and Valediction, and tend to the faith of the Exiled. Only natural-born Marines will take an oath of Chaplaincy. The Created Marines feel that the task is above their status as constructs to preach the word of the Emperor. Every full combat squad has a Chaplain with them to protect it and to see to its spiritual and psychological well being. The depression and emptiness of being exiled as well as the knowledge that most Grey Legion are not MEN leads to varying degrees of apathy and frustration. A squad specific Chaplain is called a Deacon. Deacons take the place of a Sergeant in combat squads of the Grey Legion.
Full Chaplains are the Chaplain and Lord Chaplain. These positions are filled by the most pious and loyal Natural-born Space Marines. They have been extensively trained and taught by the Chapters original Chaplains who then stepped down as Chaplains to take over Captaincies and other officerial duties.
